India’s Gaganyatri Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has been seen smiling and healthy as he looks out from the iconic cupola of the International Space Station (ISS). He reached the ISS on June 26 for a 14-day mission and has since been focused on completing critical scientific tasks. During his interaction with the Prime Minister, he shared a moving thought: “From space, you don’t see any borders. The Earth looks united.”
Group Captain Shukla is part of an Axiom Space mission crew that includes commander Peggy Whitson, pilot Shubhanshu “Shux” Shukla, and mission specialists Slawosz “Suave” Uznanski-Wisniewski and Tibor Kapu. Over the past nine days, the team has been engaged in scientific research, technology demonstrations, and educational outreach, steadily progressing through mission goals aimed at benefiting both future space travel and life on Earth.
Despite the high public interest, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has not yet released photos or videos showing Group Captain Shukla inside the ISS or interacting with Indian students. On July 3 and 4, he participated in live outreach sessions with schoolchildren in Thiruvananthapuram, Bengaluru, and his alma mater City Montessori School in Lucknow, where over 500 students engaged directly with him.
In a delayed update, ISRO stated that these activities are part of its outreach programme aimed at inspiring young minds to explore careers in science and technology. The organisation is expected to release the videos soon, as the public eagerly awaits visuals of these inspiring moments.
As part of his mission tasks, Group Captain Shukla documented the myogenesis investigation to study how the absence of gravity affects muscle health. He also worked on the Space Micro Algae experiment, which could support future space missions with food, oxygen, and fuel. In addition, he conducted the ‘Sprouts project’ to observe how seeds grow in space, which may help develop sustainable farming systems for long missions.
He also recorded a STEM demonstration showing the effects of microgravity on physical and chemical changes, such as mixing and phase transitions.
In his interaction with the Prime Minister, Shukla said, “Bharat looks bhavya,” echoing the historic words of Rakesh Sharma who once said, “Saare jahan se achha.”
