Shirish Chandra Murmu Appointed as Deputy Governor at Reserve Bank of India

The government has appointed Shirish Chandra Murmu as the new Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India for a three-year term, effective October 9. He will succeed M Rajeshwar Rao, whose tenure ends on October 8.

The appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.

Murmu is a career central banker who has served as Executive Director at the RBI for the past six years. He currently leads the Department of Supervision, which monitors all banks and non-banks under the RBI’s regulatory framework.

Having joined the RBI in 1991, Murmu brings over 33 years of experience in central banking across mid and senior management roles. He has chaired several high-level internal committees reviewing RBI regulations in various areas. In addition, Murmu holds charge of the Secretary’s Department, which provides secretarial support to the RBI Central Board and its committees.

The Reserve Bank of India has four Deputy Governors in total. The other three currently serving are T Rabi Sankar, Swaminathan J, and Poonam Gupta.
