India is currently evaluating a significant combat drone deal with US-based Shield AI, which, if finalized, would mark the nation’s first defense technology transfer initiative of its kind. The proposed agreement involves the import of Shield AI’s V-Bat combat drones for the Indian Air Force.
Beyond the initial procurement, the deal lays crucial groundwork for local manufacturing through a joint venture with JSW Defence, a subsidiary of the multi-industry conglomerate JSW Group. This strategic partnership aims to facilitate the transfer of advanced drone technology to India, aligning with the country’s ‘Make in India’ defense objectives.
The initial deal with the Indian Air Force is projected to be worth $35 million. Following this, JSW Defence and Shield AI have entered into a separate $90-million joint venture (JV) agreement specifically for the transfer of the V-Bat drone’s technology to JSW.
This initiative is a testament to India’s commitment to modernizing its defense capabilities and fostering indigenous production of advanced military hardware. It also highlights the growing collaboration between Indian and international defense technology firms.
“This potential deal with Shield AI is a game-changer for India’s defense manufacturing landscape,” stated a defense analyst. “It not only equips our armed forces with cutting-edge technology but also ensures that critical knowledge and production capabilities are transferred to our domestic industry, boosting self-reliance and innovation.”
The V-Bat drones are known for their vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capabilities, offering versatility in various operational environments. The technology transfer component of the deal is expected to significantly enhance India’s capabilities in unmanned aerial systems.
