Shell outlines plans to expand gas operations and GCC presence in India

At a time when India is emerging as a key energy and operations hub, Shell plc is preparing to scale up its footprint in the country through a sharper focus on integrated gas and Global Capability Centres (GCCs).

Shell plc plans to expand its operations in India by strengthening its integrated gas ecosystem and growing its GCC network, according to Mansi Tripathy, senior vice president for APAC lubricants and country chair, Shell India, in an interview with a financial daily.

As part of its gas strategy, Shell India aims to sign additional liquefied natural gas (LNG) agreements with domestic partners. The company is also planning to increase the capacity of its 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) LNG regasification terminal located at Hazira in Surat.

Shell currently plays a significant role in India’s gas market. In 2024, the company supplied nearly 10% of the country’s total LNG imports of 26.6 million tonnes, underlining its strong market position.

Beyond supply, Shell is working closely with the government and industry partners to promote new gas applications across India. Key focus areas include gas-to-power solutions, wider use of LNG in the transport sector, and initiatives to bring natural gas under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) framework to drive broader adoption.

Alongside its energy business, the company is also planning to expand its Global Capability Centres in India. The company already runs GCCs that support global finance and IT operations, reinforcing India’s importance as a strategic hub within Shell’s worldwide network.

In parallel, Shell is strengthening its lubricants business in India as part of its overall growth roadmap in the country.

Shell’s expansion plans across integrated gas, GCCs, and lubricants underline India’s growing importance in its global strategy. The approach reflects continued investment in energy infrastructure and enterprise capabilities, positioning India as a key pillar in Shell’s long-term growth plans.
