France’s second-largest telecom provider, SFR, is currently experiencing a significant mobile network outage. This downtime has rendered it impossible for thousands of users nationwide to access texts, calls, and mobile internet.
The company has acknowledged the outage and is actively investigating the situation. Additionally, broadband contract holders with SFR are also impacted, as they are unable to use the internet in their homes.
Reports of the disruption started coming in around 11:00 AM local time (2:30 PM IST), with hundreds of users quickly indicating that the network was down. At its peak, around 4:53 PM IST, the outage tracking website Downdetector noted over 10,000 reports of the SFR network being down from various locations in France. However, normal service is anticipated to resume later this evening.
What SFR said about the widespread mobile network outage
“We would like to inform you that a technical incident is currently impacting our network. Our technical teams are fully mobilized to restore the situation. We apologize for any inconvenience.”
According to Downdetector, the outage has not been resolved for all SFR users. Although the number of reports has decreased, nearly 2,000 users are still affected at the time of this writing.
This is not the first instance of widespread mobile network outages affecting French residents. In November 2024, users of the ‘Free’ network faced an outage that lasted several hours in some cases.
Recently, in April, a massive blackout impacted Spain, Portugal, and parts of southern France, disrupting the lives of nearly 50 million people across Europe. This outage halted subway systems, interrupted phone services, disabled traffic lights, and rendered ATMs unusable. It also led to the suspension of matches at the Madrid Open.
Public transport systems, airports, traffic lights, and phone services in major cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon, and parts of southern France were all affected.
