SCLR Northbound Flyover Extension Set to Open Soon

Mumbai is set to experience major relief in road traffic as the northbound extension of the Santacruz Chembur Link Road (SCLR) nears completion. The elevated flyover, built at an estimated cost of ₹650 crore, will provide a direct route over the Western Express Highway and the Kalina Vakola flyover, helping motorists bypass heavy traffic signals and reach the airport and northern suburbs faster.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has confirmed that major construction work is finished. Key tasks like street lighting, road resurfacing, and load testing are already done. The final phase, which includes painting, placing road signs, landscaping, and removing temporary structures, is currently in progress. Officials have said these activities are necessary to ensure safety, durability, and proper finish before opening the flyover for public use.

Unseasonal rains have slightly delayed painting and other final steps, which require dry weather. However, if weather conditions remain steady, the extension is expected to open by the end of August and possibly even on Independence Day. According to an official update, the project is now fully structurally complete and final touches are being added.

Once functional, the new elevated flyover section will allow smoother travel for commuters coming from Chembur and Bandra Kurla Complex, eliminating the need to stop at the Hans Bhugra Marg and Vakola junction traffic signals. The extension is expected to cut travel time by up to 45 minutes and improve access to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

A major highlight of the flyover project is the 215 metre cable stayed bridge with a 100 metre curved span made using an orthotropic steel deck. This bridge, which stands 22 metres above the ground and 9 metres above the existing Vakola flyover, is the first of its kind in India. It was designed to allow sharp curvature and reduce interference with ongoing traffic below.

With all key components now in place, the SCLR extension will soon ease long-standing traffic issues at critical junctions, helping thousands of daily commuters travel more smoothly across the city.
