The Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL) Mohali has successfully completed the fabrication of 20 semiconductor chips, all designed by students from 17 different Indian engineering institutes, including prestigious institutions like the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Jammu and Indore. This achievement marks a significant milestone in India’s efforts to foster indigenous chip design and manufacturing capabilities.
In addition to these completed chips, SCL Mohali currently has 36 more student-designed chips from India at various stages of fabrication, with an expectation for them to be ready for tape-out within the next six months. This robust pipeline underscores the growing talent and innovation within India’s academic and research sectors in semiconductor technology.
SCL Mohali initiated its program to offer end-to-end fabrication, testing, and packaging support for chip design startups late in 2024. This initiative aims to provide critical infrastructure and expertise to budding entrepreneurs and researchers, enabling them to transform their chip designs into physical products.
This chip development is crucial for building a self-reliant semiconductor ecosystem in India, reducing dependence on foreign foundries, and encouraging more students and startups to venture into the complex yet vital field of chip design and manufacturing.
