Major Satcom equipment manufacturers are actively forging partnerships with global satellite internet giants Starlink (SpaceX) and Amazon Project Kuiper, positioning themselves for a significant entry into the booming Indian market. These strategic alliances are being finalized in anticipation of the Indian government’s expected allocation of satellite broadband spectrum.
Both Starlink and Amazon Kuiper are looking to capitalize on India’s burgeoning demand for connectivity, targeting both business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-government (B2G) satellite broadband markets, with plans to also serve retail users. They are adopting hybrid go-to-market strategies that combine direct sales with partner-led distribution models to maximize reach across the diverse Indian landscape.
Key Indian VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) players, including Hughes Communications, Nelco, and Inmarsat, are expected to play a crucial role in supporting the rollout of these satellite broadband services. Their expertise will be vital for deployment in critical sectors such as banking, retail, oil and gas, defense, and for providing essential telecom backhaul.
Starlink has already made significant strides in the Indian market, having partnered with major telecom operators Jio and Airtel. The company is reportedly close to receiving its final regulatory approvals to commence operations, having secured its Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) license and awaiting authorization from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe).Â
In contrast, Amazon Kuiper is still in the process of obtaining necessary clearances from both GMPCS and IN-SPACe, as it prepares to enter the competitive Indian satellite broadband arena.
