Samsung targets 800 million AI-enabled devices in 2026 amid chip challenges and privacy concerns

Samsung Electronics is accelerating its artificial intelligence push as it looks to sharply expand the number of mobile devices running Google’s Gemini features over the next year.

The South Korean company plans to reach 800 million smartphones and tablets with Gemini powered AI features in 2026. By the end of 2025 Samsung had enabled these features on around 400 million devices. As the largest supporter of Google’s Android ecosystem Samsung said it wants to bring AI across all products and services as quickly as possible while strengthening its position against Apple and Chinese smartphone makers. The company is also extending AI integration into televisions and home appliances.

However, the plan comes with major challenges. Samsung has warned that the global smartphone market could shrink in 2026 due to memory chip shortages. Rising chip prices are also pressuring margins and the company has not ruled out higher phone prices. As of October 2024 Gemini, Nano which is the lightweight on device version of Google’s AI model runs on only 6 Galaxy models. Gemini Nano requires AI accelerators in advanced chips such as Samsung’s Exynos 2400e and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

Many older phones do not support on device AI processing so Samsung relies heavily on cloud-based systems. This approach adds latency and raises privacy concerns as user data may be used to improve AI models. Reaching the 800 million target will require broader support in mid-range devices or wider use of cloud processing. At the same time developers face limited access. Samsung has withdrawn its Neural Software Development Kit and there is no public program similar to Google’s AI Edge SDK. Google has only granted early access to a few partners such as Adobe and Grammarly. Software companies are now watching Samsung’s developer portal for future tools though timelines and API access remain unclear.
