Samsung introduces Galaxy XR mixed reality headset with advanced display and AI features

Samsung has entered spatial computing with Galaxy XR. It is a mixed reality headset that runs on Android XR and is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 Plus Gen 2. Galaxy AI features are included from the beginning. This shows it is a serious product and a key step for Samsung and Google’s spatial platform.

The headset has Micro OLED panels with a resolution of 3552 by 3840 per eye and refresh rates up to 90 Hz. It offers a wide field of view at 109 degrees horizontally and 100 degrees vertically. It supports tracking for eyes, hands and head. Iris recognition handles unlocks and sign-ins for easy switching between users. The Galaxy VR battery sits in a separate pack to reduce weight on the face. A removable light shield allows a bright passthrough view or a darker immersive experience.

Android XR is the core of the software. Google has rebuilt Android for devices worn on the head. Gemini works as the system assistant. You can talk to it, point at items around you or use your gaze to guide actions. Google apps are already adapted for spatial use. Maps, YouTube, Photos and Chrome can be used inside the headset. Circle to Search works in passthrough. You can look at a real object, circle it in your view and get results without leaving the scene.

Snapdragon XR2 Plus Gen 2 supports high resolution displays and multiple tracking cameras. This helps with stability and responsiveness which are important for comfort during long use.

Samsung is not targeting gaming alone. The company is showing multitasking with floating windows, viewing several live sports feeds together and turning personal photos and videos into spatial scenes. The AI features aim to help with real tasks. You can ask for guidance or check directions without breaking immersion.

Samsung estimates about two hours of general use with the external battery pack. The headset is priced at 1799 dollars in the United States through Samsung’s channels. Optional Galaxy XR controller and travel case are 249.99 dollars each. Early buyers receive an Explorer Pack with Google subscriptions and XR content.

Comfort features include weight distribution across the forehead and the back of the head. Beamforming microphones improve voice clarity. The sensor setup includes tracking cameras, eye tracking, colour passthrough, inertial sensors and a depth sensor.

Battery performance, camera results in low light and controller experience will need real world testing. The price is premium but the use cases are wider than earlier Galaxy VR products. Android XR and Gemini provide a stronger software story.

Galaxy XR is a confident first step for Android XR. It focuses on everyday usefulness. If Samsung can build a strong app base and deliver helpful AI support, Galaxy XR could define mixed reality on Android.
