Samsung is reportedly rolling out a new artificial intelligence-powered feature in China with the release of its One UI 8 operating system. The feature, named Voice Captioning, builds upon the existing Live Caption functionality and is said to offer real-time transcription and translation across multiple languages.
As shared by a user claiming to be a moderator of the r/OneUI subreddit, Voice Captioning can transcribe not just phone audio, but also live conversations, user speech via the device’s microphone, and audio from videos and media files. This means users can choose to generate captions either for what they say or for audio playing on the device.
Unlike the previous Live Caption feature, which only transcribed calls in the same language, Voice Captioning is said to support real-time multilingual translation. Although the complete list of supported languages was not mentioned, the feature appears to be part of Samsung’s broader Galaxy AI offerings.
Images shared by the tipster show that Voice Captioning also includes the ability to summarise transcriptions in different languages. These transcriptions and summaries can be saved as Word files, and the audio recordings can also be stored for later reference.
To activate the feature, users need to add the Voice Captioning shortcut to the Quick Settings panel and grant the necessary permissions. They will also need to select the target languages for translation. At present, this feature is reportedly only available in China with the One UI 8 update, and there is no information yet on its global rollout.
Voice Captioning aims to provide more accessible and intelligent ways to interact with media and live conversations, highlighting Samsung’s push into AI-driven innovation within its ecosystem.
