Samsung has taken a dig at rival smartwatch makers, suggesting that their devices rely on weak chips to achieve longer battery life. This comes despite brands like Huawei making notable progress in the wearable market with feature-rich devices.
The South Korean company admitted that its own Galaxy wearables, such as the new Galaxy Watch 8 Classic, fall short in battery life compared with Chinese alternatives. While some competitors offer over a week of battery performance, the Watch 8 Classic lasts around two days.
Choi Jong-min, executive director of Health Hardware Development at Samsung MX, addressed the difference in a recent interview. He said Chinese smartwatches use low-power chips and components, which extend battery life but reduce performance and ultimately affect the user experience. Without naming specific brands, he appeared to be referring to companies such as Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO and OnePlus.
According to Choi, some Chinese smartwatches operate with two chips or two operating systems to manage battery efficiency. He stressed that Samsung’s focus is not on market share but on improving health features in its wearables. Choi also hinted at upcoming models, the Galaxy Watch 9 and Watch 10, which will reportedly include more advanced health-related capabilities.
However, the Watch 5 from a major Chinese brand challenges Samsung’s remarks. Featuring the world’s first X-Tap technology, it delivers advanced health monitoring and strong performance without appearing to use low-grade components.
Some industry observers believe Samsung’s comments could be an attempt to shift attention away from its own battery limitations. The Galaxy Watch 8 Classic, despite being a flagship model, has not matched competitors in battery endurance. Whether future Samsung models can outperform their Chinese counterparts in health innovation remains to be seen.
