Sam Altman says India could soon become OpenAI’s largest market as GPT-5 launches

OpenAI has launched its latest artificial intelligence model, GPT-5, introducing significant improvements in accuracy, speed, reasoning, and mathematical abilities. The announcement was made during a recent event where CEO Sam Altman highlighted India’s growing importance for the company.

Calling India an “incredibly fast-growing” market, Altman noted the rapid pace at which people and businesses in the country are embracing AI. He said, “India is our second-largest market in the world after the US, and it may well become our largest market. It’s incredibly fast-growing, but what users are doing with AI, what citizens of India are doing with AI, is really quite remarkable.” Altman also shared that OpenAI is collaborating with local partners to make AI more relevant and affordable for India and revealed plans to visit the country in September.

According to OpenAI, GPT-5 is the company’s “best model yet for coding and agentic tasks.” It will be available in three versions — gpt-5, gpt-5-mini, and gpt-5-nano — enabling developers to choose the right balance of performance, cost, and speed. In the API, GPT-5 serves as the reasoning model delivering ChatGPT’s highest performance. A separate non-reasoning version, gpt-5-chat-latest, will also be released.

Altman described GPT-5 as a major leap forward from GPT-4 and called it a “pretty significant step” towards Artificial General Intelligence. He added, “GPT-5 is really the first time that I think one of our mainline models has felt like you can ask a legitimate expert, like a PhD-level expert, anything… We wanted to make it available in our free tier for the first time.”

In terms of availability, OpenAI has confirmed that ChatGPT Team customers can already access GPT-5. The model will be rolled out to Enterprise and Edu customers next week. It is now live in the OpenAI API, allowing developers to begin using it immediately. Team, Enterprise, and Edu users will soon have access to GPT-5 Pro, an extended reasoning version designed for more reliable and detailed responses.

ChatGPT Plus subscribers, paying 20 dollars per month, will receive higher GPT-5 usage limits compared to free users. Pro subscribers, paying 200 dollars per month, will enjoy unlimited access to GPT-5 along with an enhanced GPT-5 Pro version offering improved performance.
