OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has joined the ongoing internet trend surrounding the phrase “6 7,” which recently went viral among teens and on social media platforms. In a lighthearted post on X, Altman joked that the upcoming GPT 6 model will be renamed “GPT 6 7. You’re welcome.” His comment came shortly after the term was selected as Word of the Year by an online dictionary platform, despite the fact that the phrase does not have a clear definition.
The term “6 7” rose to popularity during the summer and quickly spread across TikTok and other platforms. It is widely used by young audiences, often as a playful or confusing expression without any specific meaning. According to the online dictionary platform, its Word of the Year choice aims to capture cultural shifts and online behavior, noting that even it is “still trying to figure out exactly what it means.”
The phrase is believed to have originated from the rapper Skrilla’s 2024 track titled “Doot Doot 6 7,” which later became widely used in videos, especially those involving basketball highlights. NBA player LaMelo Ball, who stands 6 feet 7 inches tall, was frequently associated with the trend. Another viral moment came from a clip of a young boy shouting the phrase while another person made a hand juggling gesture, cementing the phrase’s place in internet culture.
When it comes to meaning, there is no clear answer. Some people use “6 7” to express uncertainty or something that is neither good nor bad. Others simply use it to confuse or amuse those who are unaware of the trend. Another dictionary described it as “a nonsensical expression used especially by teens and tweens.” Despite the lack of a fixed meaning, the phrase continues to spread because of the shared sense of humor and connection it creates online.
The trend has also reached beyond the internet. Teachers and parents have tried to understand or regulate its use, with some schools discouraging it in classrooms. Meanwhile, others have embraced it in humorous ways, including costumes and parody videos. The gesture linked with “6 7” has even appeared in professional sports celebrations, including NFL games.
