Russia begins building satellite internet network with first LEO launch

Russia has initiated its push into the satellite internet space with the deployment of its first batch of broadband satellites, aiming to compete with global providers like SpaceX.

The launch was carried out by Russian aerospace firm Bureau 1440, which placed 16 low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites into space as part of its plan to develop a domestic alternative to Starlink.

This marks the early stage of a larger constellation that is expected to provide high-speed internet connectivity across Russia and potentially expand to other regions over time.

The company confirmed that the satellites have successfully reached their intended orbit and will now undergo system checks before becoming fully operational.

The move is part of Russia’s broader strategy to build a LEO-based satellite network capable of delivering broadband services similar to existing global systems. Officials have positioned the initiative as a direct response to Starlink, which currently operates a much larger satellite network.

While this launch is a key milestone, Russia is still in the initial phase of deployment. The network is expected to scale gradually with additional satellite launches and supporting infrastructure in the coming years.

The development also reflects a wider global shift, as countries and companies continue to invest in satellite internet technologies to expand connectivity, particularly in remote and underserved areas.
