Rolls-Royce to Invest $75 Million in Expanding South Carolina Engine Facility

Rolls-Royce, the British aerospace and defense company, has announced a $75 million investment to expand its engine manufacturing facility in Aiken, South Carolina. The expansion will focus on increasing the production of mtu Series 4000 diesel engines, which are essential for backup power systems in data centers and other critical infrastructure.

Adam Wood, managing director for Rolls-Royce’s power systems division in America, said, “The increased investment strengthens our ability to serve our U.S. customers — especially in the fast-growing American data center industry.”

This development will create 60 new jobs and boost Rolls-Royce’s manufacturing capabilities in the U.S., further establishing the company’s industrial footprint in the region. The investment also marks a significant shift as Rolls-Royce deepens its presence in the energy and power systems sector, expanding beyond its traditional aerospace focus.

As part of the project, the company will begin machining additional mtu Series 4000 engine components in the U.S. Currently, many of these components are produced in Germany and shipped to the U.S. as finished products.

Adam Riddle, CEO for North America, stated, “We are proud to support America’s growing demand for reliable, domestically made energy systems that strengthen our nation’s energy independence and security.”

This marks Rolls-Royce’s second major announcement in two days. On Monday, a new partnership between the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic was announced to collaborate on small modular reactors. Rolls-Royce SMRs could potentially export up to six reactors to the Czech Republic under the agreement.

With this new investment, the South Carolina facility is set to become a key part of Rolls-Royce’s North American power systems strategy. The first phase of the expansion will begin in the first quarter of 2026, with production expected to start in July 2027.
