A seventy three year old retired Indian Air Force officer from Kondhwa in Pune has lost Rs 5 lakh after a cybercriminal posed as a bank representative. The scammer tricked him by claiming to verify his Life Certificate, which is an important annual requirement for all pensioners.
Police reports state that the officer had submitted his Life Certificate at the Kondhwa branch of his bank on November 3. The branch confirmed the submission by email to him and to the pension disbursing branch in New Delhi. When he tried to contact the Delhi branch to confirm whether the certificate had been received, he was unable to connect.
While searching online for contact numbers, he soon received a call from a person who claimed to be a bank official offering assistance. The fraudster asked him to download an APK file and provide sensitive details such as his debit card number and CVV.
After entering the information, the officer received an alert that his transaction limit had been increased. Soon after, another message informed him that Rs 5 lakh had been transferred from his account through IMPS.
During the process, the officer also received several calls and alerts from an unknown number warning him. He ignored them, believing that the person he was speaking to was a genuine bank representative.
When the officer realised he had been cheated, he immediately blocked his bank account and filed an online complaint. Based on the initial findings, the Kondhwa Police registered an FIR on Wednesday.
