Retab, a French artificial intelligence (AI) startup, has successfully secured $3.5 million in pre-seed funding concurrently with the launch of its platform designed to automate complex document workflows.
The funding round saw participation from prominent early-stage investors including VentureFriends, Kima Ventures, and K5 Global, alongside notable individual investors such as Eric Schmidt (via StemAI), Olivier Pomel (CEO of Datadog), and Florian Douetteau (CEO of Dataiku).
According to Louis de Benoist, co-founder and CEO of Retab, the platform functions as an “OS for reliably extracting structured data.” Its core purpose is to make advanced AI models practical for developers by incorporating essential features like error handling and structured outputs, which are crucial for building production-ready applications rather than mere prototypes. This investment is expected to fuel the expansion of the platform’s capabilities and meet the rising demand from AI startups and internal innovation teams.
Retab’s platform operates as a developer platform and SDK that revolutionizes document processing using large language models. Developers can specify their desired data schema, and Retab automates the intricate processes of dataset labeling, evaluations, automated prompt engineering, and model selection. The platform ensures high performance through intelligent checks and balances, utilizing self-optimizing schemas where an AI agent refines instructions for maximum accuracy. It also features model-agnostic routing, directing tasks to the most suitable model based on cost, speed, or accuracy, which can significantly reduce expenses.
Retab employs guided reasoning and a k-LLM consensus mechanism, encouraging models to think step-by-step and collaboratively assess uncertainty. The company plans to expand its platform to apply reliable data extraction methods to websites and integrate with popular automation platforms like n8n, Zapier, and Dify. Retab’s ultimate goal is to become an intelligent middleware layer that seamlessly connects unstructured data with AI agents.
