A new concept in space technology is pushing the limits of how sunlight can be used on Earth. Reflect Orbital has proposed using satellites with large mirrors to reflect sunlight back to Earth during nighttime.
The idea is to provide “on-demand daylight” for activities such as late-night construction work and emergency response operations. However, the service comes at a high cost of $5,000 per hour, with long-term contracts required.
Challenges and trends in the field
The company is starting with a prototype satellite that features a 60-foot mirror. While the concept is innovative, it comes with several challenges. High precision will be needed to ensure the reflected light does not disrupt wildlife or affect stargazing.
In addition, deploying thousands of such satellites will involve navigating complex international regulations.
This project reflects a growing trend where space technology is expanding beyond traditional uses like GPS and internet services. However, the idea of creating nighttime sunlight is still in its early stages and not yet a practical reality.
