Rednote Unveils Open-Source AI Model as China Pushes for Global AI Leadership

China’s Rednote, one of the leading social media platforms in the country, has introduced an open-source large language model, aligning with a trend among Chinese tech companies to make their AI models publicly accessible.

This strategy differs from that of many U.S. tech giants like OpenAI and Google, which have retained ownership of their most sophisticated models, although some American companies, including Meta, have also made open-source models available.

By open sourcing, Chinese firms can showcase their technological prowess, cultivate developer communities, and extend their global influence, especially as the U.S. has attempted to hinder China’s technological advancement through export limitations on high-end semiconductors.

Rednote’s model, named dots.llm1, can be downloaded from the developer platform Hugging Face. A technical paper detailing the model was uploaded on Friday.

In coding tasks, the model shows performance similar to Alibaba’s Qwen 2.5 series, although it falls short compared to more advanced models like DeepSeek-V3, according to the technical paper.

RedNote, also referred to by its Chinese name Xiaohongshu, is a platform akin to Instagram where users can share photos, videos, text posts, and live streams. The platform attracted international attention earlier this year when many U.S. users turned to the app amid fears of a possible TikTok ban.

The company has been investing in large language model development since 2023, shortly after OpenAI launched ChatGPT in late 2022.

In recent months, it has intensified its AI initiatives, introducing Diandian, an AI-driven search application that assists users in locating content on Xiaohongshu’s primary platform.

Other companies adopting an open-source strategy include Alibaba, which released Qwen 3, an enhanced version of its model in April.

Earlier this year, the startup DeepSeek unveiled its budget-friendly R1 model as open-source software, disrupting the global AI landscape with its competitive performance, despite being developed at a significantly lower cost than Western competitors.
