Reddit moves to verify and label bots to protect user trust

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape online conversations, Reddit Inc. is preparing to introduce bot identification and labelling across its platform. The move is aimed at reducing the impact of automated accounts and strengthening trust among users.

Chief Executive Officer Steve Huffman said the company will soon begin verifying and tagging bots. This step follows Reddit’s recent rollout of verified profiles for public figures, brands, trusted partners, and individual users.

“In the age of AI, if you can’t easily distinguish a real person’s thoughts or recommendations from a bot, that trust erodes,” Huffman wrote in the company’s shareholder letter. “That’s why we’re actively working on ways to preserve our authenticity and conversation quality.”

He added that Reddit “will quickly move to bot verification and labelling next. We’re making good progress here and are excited to share more updates in the coming weeks.”

The initiative reflects a wider industry push to address the growing influence of automated accounts, which are increasingly affecting discussions and weakening user experience on social platforms. Earlier this week, OpenAI was reported to be working on a biometric-based social networking platform focused on making online interactions more human and cutting down spam in feeds, comments, and chats.

In the coming months, social media platforms are expected to tighten controls as bot activity rises. Elon Musk’s X has already removed around 1.7 million bot accounts, though automated behaviour continues to appear on the platform.

Alongside bot labelling, Reddit is also sharpening its focus on user growth and engagement. Huffman said the company plans to improve retention among new and casual users through better onboarding. Reddit also intends to combine its AI-powered search tool with Reddit Answers and use AI and machine learning to make user feeds more personalised and relevant.
