Mobility platform Rapido has introduced a pilot of its dedicated food delivery app Ownly in select areas of Bengaluru including Koramangala and HSR Layout, according to sources familiar with the matter.
This move comes despite recent reports suggesting that Rapido had paused the pilot due to procedural challenges. A team from a media outlet was able to successfully place a pizza order in Koramangala using the Ownly app.
“The food delivery service will roll out to other parts of Bengaluru in the coming months, while expansion to cities like Delhi NCR and Mumbai will depend on its performance in Bengaluru,” said one source who did not wish to be named.
With Ownly, Rapido aims to compete with market leaders Swiggy and Zomato by using its large rider network for faster deliveries and offering transparent pricing without inflated rates, packaging charges or high restaurant commissions. However, industry experts caution that high operational costs, stiff competition and logistical hurdles could make it challenging for Rapido to gain significant market share.
As per its finalised rate card shared with the National Restaurant Association of India, Rapido will follow a three tier flat pricing system. Orders up to Rs 100 will cost Rs 20, orders between Rs 100 and Rs 400 will be charged Rs 25 plus GST, and orders above Rs 400 will be charged Rs 50 plus GST. Restaurant commissions will be kept between 8 and 15 percent compared to the usual 16 to 30 percent in the industry.
Meanwhile, Swiggy has expressed its intention to exit its investment in Rapido, citing changes in their business relationship. The company led by Sriharsha Majety had invested 180 million US dollars in Rapido in April 2022 and currently holds around 12 percent stake in the mobility platform.
