Districts in Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Maharashtra are rapidly emerging as new cybercrime hotspots, prompting the Centre to urge states to intensify crackdowns, accelerate investigations, and clear backlogs to prevent the situation from worsening.
According to sources, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan recently chaired a high-level meeting with senior officials from these hotspot districts and ranges, along with top officers, to tackle the growing cybercrime threat. The meeting saw the participation of Directors General of Police (DGPs), police commissioners from all states and Union Territories (UTs), designated state cybercrime heads, and officers from the newly identified hotspot regions.
While Jharkhand has traditionally been a well-known cybercrime hub, fresh hotspots have now been identified in Bharatpur Range (Rajasthan), Mumbai (Maharashtra), Kolkata (West Bengal), and Dumka (Jharkhand), sources said.
District SSPs present at the meeting were instructed to take urgent steps to curb cybercrime. “The government has advised states to leverage technical support from the Centre to fast-track cybercrime investigations. With new hotspots raising alarm among cyber-security agencies, another focused meeting will soon be convened to prioritise investigations,” a senior official said.
