Railways approves new superfast train between Bengaluru and Mumbai after 30 years

The Union Ministry of Railways has approved a new superfast train connecting Bengaluru and Mumbai, fulfilling a demand that has been pending for three decades. BJP leader Tejasvi Surya announced the approval on Saturday, highlighting that despite both cities being major economic hubs, they were previously linked by only one train, the Udyan Express, which takes more than 24 hours for the journey.

Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw was quoted in Surya’s statement saying, “Very soon, we will be starting a superfast train between Bengaluru and Mumbai. Both cities are major economic hubs and capacity expansion at their stations has now made this possible.”

Surya, representing Bengaluru South in Lok Sabha, noted that over the last 30 years, despite the rapid growth of both cities, only one superfast train served this route. He added, “Last year alone, over 26 lakh people travelled by air between the two cities. This new service will make travel more affordable and convenient for lakhs of citizens.”

The announcement follows Surya’s consistent efforts over the past four years, including raising the issue in Parliament, Public Accounts Committee meetings, and discussions with senior Railway officials.

The new train is expected to decongest travel, provide a comfortable alternative to flights and buses, and further strengthen economic and social ties between Bengaluru and Mumbai. It will benefit daily commuters, business travelers, and families, boosting connectivity between two of India’s most dynamic metropolitan regions.

On behalf of the people of Karnataka, Surya expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Minister of State for Railways V Somanna for making this long-pending project a reality.
