Early leaks around Qualcomm’s next flagship chipset suggest a shift in focus, with performance improvements expected to be more balanced rather than headline-grabbing.
Qualcomm is likely to unveil the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series in September 2026. However, as per a leak by Chinese tipster Fixed Focus Digital, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, built on a 2nm process, may deliver less than 20% improvement in CPU performance compared to its predecessor.
Instead of major CPU upgrades, the focus may move towards GPU enhancements and efficiency. The chipset is expected to retain a dual Prime core setup but with a redesigned performance core structure.
Rather than using 6 identical performance cores at the same clock speed, Qualcomm is reportedly shifting to a split configuration. The cores could be arranged in 2 clusters with a 3+3 layout running at different frequencies.
A similar approach is also expected from MediaTek, with its upcoming Dimensity 9600 chip likely to feature a 2+3+3 CPU configuration.
There are practical reasons behind this shift. Mobile CPUs are approaching their limits in terms of clock speeds, especially under power constraints. As a result, companies may now focus more on efficiency and sustained performance instead of short bursts of peak speed.
On the GPU front, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro is expected to bring more noticeable upgrades. It may feature an improved Adreno A850 GPU with a larger cache and support for LPDDR6 memory.
These upgrades could lead to better gaming performance and improved on-device AI capabilities, even if CPU gains remain modest.
Additionally, Qualcomm is also expected to launch a standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 variant, which may offer an even smaller performance improvement.
