Qualcomm targets next-gen AI PCs with Snapdragon X2 Elite and strong India R&D push

Qualcomm is expanding its role in the AI era as connected devices grow across smartphones, laptops and many other categories. During a recent interaction at the company headquarters, senior leaders discussed the new Snapdragon X Series platform with a focus on the Snapdragon X2 Elite. In separate sessions, a small group of international journalists also met Kedar Kondap, senior vice president and general manager for compute and gaming, who shared insights on performance, security and the future of AI powered PCs.

Kondap explained how Snapdragon Guardian Technology aims to keep both consumers and businesses safe as cyber risks rise. He said commercial users can decide how IT teams manage devices, while parents can use features like geofencing or quick location checks if children misplace their PCs. The key advantage is continuous connectivity through cellular modems, which allows remote management even when the device is away from WIFI. In commercial settings, IT teams can take control during suspicious activity as long as the device has some battery power. Kondap stressed that the goal is to give users and administrators reliable control at all times.

He confirmed that the India team has played a major role in the development of the new X Series chip across hardware, software and platform engineering. Discussing market expectations, he compared the coming PC shift to the way India moved from feature phones to advanced smartphones once users recognised real value. He noted that PC upgrades have been slow because buyers often replace devices only when they fail. Qualcomm wants to change this by enabling meaningful experiences such as better cameras, stronger AI features and improved performance that make consumers want to upgrade. The company is also investing in in store displays in India and other markets to explain these benefits directly to customers.

Kondap spoke about the fast pace of AI and how Qualcomm works ahead of time while models and quantisation techniques evolve rapidly. He said the company is building tools with partners and offering an orchestration layer so developers can work easily without depending on a single model. On working with multiple OEMs, he highlighted the strength of the Windows ecosystem and praised Microsoft as a key partner. He summed up the appeal of the Snapdragon X2 Elite with five points leading performance, leading battery life, leading AI capability, leading user facing technologies and new form factors.
