Qualcomm Launches New Snapdragon Chips to Power AI Across Devices

Qualcomm is charting a new course beyond being a chipmaker, aiming to become a full-fledged ecosystem player. At its Snapdragon Summit in Maui, Hawaii, CEO Cristiano Amon outlined a strategy where AI agents form the center of a personal ecosystem, connecting smartphones, laptops, smartwatches, earbuds, and smart glasses in a seamless experience.

“The AI understands human intentions. Those devices are no longer just accessories. They now engage directly with the AI agent, and that changes everything,” Amon said.

As part of this vision, Qualcomm unveiled its latest processors for smartphones and PCs. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 mobile chip, built on TSMC’s 3nm process with Qualcomm’s in-house Oryon CPU, offers 20 percent better performance and an upgraded Adreno GPU. The company claims it is the world’s fastest mobile processor, with Samsung, Xiaomi, and OnePlus set to adopt it soon.

For PCs, Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon X Elite 2 and Elite 2 Extreme, featuring the third-generation Oryon CPU with up to 18 cores. The chips offer up to 75 percent faster CPU performance at equal power and include improved Adreno GPUs. Both processors come with an 80 TOPS Neural Processing Unit, delivering robust on-device AI performance, along with enhanced battery efficiency. PC adoption is expected in early 2026.

Qualcomm is also expanding into automotive technology, licensing self-driving tech developed with BMW, and aims for automotive revenue to reach $8 billion by 2029. While smartphones remain the main revenue driver, the company is focused on creating a unified ecosystem across multiple devices and segments, similar to Apple but through horizontal partnerships with companies like Samsung and Google.

“AI is the new UI. The interface adapts to you and understands your context,” Amon said. “In the age of AI, Snapdragon delivers performance where you need it, where you are.”

Analysts note that Qualcomm’s shift into PCs and automotive is ambitious. Success will depend on brand recognition and ecosystem adoption, but the company is well-positioned to leverage its AI-powered processors to redefine device interactions across personal electronics.
