Pune Man Caught in Web of International Cyber Fraud After Senior Citizen Loses ₹2.52 Crore

In a disturbing revelation of digital deceit, the Cyber Cell of Pimpri-Chinchwad police has unearthed a deep-rooted cyber scam that stretches far beyond borders. A man from Pune has been arrested for lending his bank account to international fraudsters, including a Pakistani national operating out of Dubai.

The case came to light following a heartbreaking complaint lodged on March 24 by a retired government officer from the state irrigation department, who fell prey to a stock market scam, resulting in a loss of ₹2.52 crore. The accused had reached out to the victim through social media, luring him with false promises of high investment returns. Once the senior citizen realised he had been tricked, he approached the police, seeking justice.

Investigators traced the stolen funds to a bank account in the Beed district. The account holder, when detained, confessed to passing on the account credentials to one Balasaheb Sakharam Chaure, a 32-year-old from Kaij, Beed. His excuse? He had shared the details “for gaming purposes.”

However, the plot thickened when Chaure was arrested from Jivachi Wadi in Kaij on March 26. Further probing revealed that he was a key associate in a cybercrime syndicate orchestrated by a Pakistani national and another fraudster, Ganesh Kale, who is based in Dubai. Chaure had been supplying mule bank accounts from Marathwada to these overseas operators.

Police reports suggest Chaure and Kale first crossed paths when the former was working as a multilevel marketing executive. Tempted by easy commissions, Chaure agreed to procure bank accounts. Since then, he has allegedly delivered 15 to 20 accounts and earned ₹2.5 lakh as commission.

“He used to collect official documents of uneducated persons, labourers and drivers to open such bank accounts. He was also in contact with cyber gangs operating from Dubai, Nepal and other parts of the world,” shared Assistant Inspector Pravin Swami from the Cyber Cell.

This chilling incident underscores the ever-evolving threats posed by cybercriminals who exploit the vulnerable and operate through seemingly ordinary people. The veil of trust and ignorance often hides the puppeteers pulling digital strings from foreign lands.
