Pune strengthens position as a key hub for Global Capability Centers

Pune is steadily emerging as a preferred destination for Global Capability Centers, supported by strong infrastructure, a skilled talent base, coordinated industry efforts, and supportive government policies.

This outlook was reinforced at an international GCC conference organised by a leading industry chamber in Pune, where senior government officials and industry leaders discussed the city’s expanding role in global industrial growth and enterprise operations.

The city’s well established IT and manufacturing corridors, including Hinjewadi and Chakan, were highlighted as major drivers enabling large scale investments and multinational capability centers. These clusters continue to attract global companies looking to build long term operational capabilities in India.

Dr. P. Velrasu, Chief Executive Officer of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation, underlined the state’s GCC potential and shared plans to add 400 new capability centers over the next 5 years. He also pointed to ongoing infrastructure upgrades aimed at supporting this expansion.

Officials outlined several strengths contributing to Pune’s GCC growth. These include a highly skilled workforce, with nearly 500000 graduates entering the talent pool every year, access to affordable housing and quality office spaces, and a business friendly environment supported by ease of doing business reforms. The city’s balanced growth approach, combining IT, manufacturing, and innovation, was also cited as a key advantage.

These factors have helped Pune host around 24% to 25% of India’s GCCs, with nearly 400 centers currently operational, according to a local publication. Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram noted that Pune’s leadership as an IT hub is rooted in ecosystem development efforts that began about 25 years ago.

Infrastructure development remains a top priority. Kaustubh Dhavse, Chief Advisor to the Chief Minister’s Office on Investment and Strategy, announced plans to further strengthen transport and communication systems over the next 18 months, reinforcing Pune’s ambition to become a future GCC capital.

Looking ahead, the state government aims to expand GCC growth beyond Pune and Mumbai to cities such as Nagpur and Nashik, and into sectors beyond technology and finance. New policy focus areas, including electric vehicle infrastructure and bamboo industry development, are expected to support Maharashtra’s broader economic growth.

With strong fundamentals and focused policy support, Pune continues to build momentum as a leading Global Capability Center hub in India.
