Bhubaneswar: On Wednesday, the police held an event in Bhubaneswar, returning a total of Rs 1.91 crore to victims of cybercrime who were scammed between January and March of this year, according to an official announcement.
The event, named ‘Money Return Mela,’ was organized by the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissionerate. The Bhubaneswar Cybercrime and Economic Offences Police Station acted quickly and effectively to address public concerns and recover the stolen funds.
Victims were targeted through various cybercrimes, including digital arrest scams, dealership fraud, APK/link fraud, customer care scams, and fake website frauds, as stated in the announcement.
In the first quarter of 2025, the police successfully recovered Rs 1,02,78,555, Rs 43,66,492, and Rs 44,75,060, which were returned to the complainants on Wednesday.
Legal actions through criminal miscellaneous cases (CMCs) have facilitated the return of substantial amounts to the victims’ bank accounts.
Beyond financial recovery, the police have also taken proactive measures to combat the proliferation of fraudulent content online, reporting the identification and blocking of 65 fake accounts across various social media platforms.
Additionally, efforts have been made to help victims regain access to their compromised accounts. The police established a helpdesk with a WhatsApp number, encouraging victims to report any cybercrime incidents occurring in Bhubaneswar.
