Rajasthan Police issues warning against cyber fraudsters posing as officers

The Rajasthan Police Cyber Crime Branch has issued an urgent advisory warning citizens about a new form of cyber fraud in which scammers impersonate police officers and intimidate people by linking them to false criminal cases. The alert follows incidents where fraudsters used the recent November 10 car blast in Delhi as a pretext to create fear and extract money or personal data from unsuspecting victims.

The advisory, issued under the direction of Director General of Police Rajiv Kumar Sharma, aims to spread awareness and prevent panic among the public. According to Deputy Inspector General (Cybercrime) Vikas Sharma, cybercriminals are contacting victims through phone calls, claiming that their mobile number or Aadhaar is linked to an ongoing criminal investigation.

The fraudsters often pressure victims by threatening legal action and offer to “arrange meetings” with senior officers. They then demand sensitive personal or banking information and sometimes request money during video calls under the false pretext of verification. These scams often involve asking for Aadhaar details, UPI information, or access to bank accounts.

The police have urged citizens to stay calm and remain cautious when receiving such calls. People have been strongly advised not to share personal, financial, or Aadhaar details with anyone posing as a police officer and to avoid clicking on suspicious links or responding to unknown messages.

If anyone receives such a fraudulent call, they should immediately report the matter to the nearest police station, dial 112, or contact the Cyber Helpdesk. Victims of financial fraud can also call the National Cyber Helpline at 1930 or file a complaint on the official portal at cybercrime.gov.in. Additionally, they are advised to inform their bank immediately to block any suspicious transactions.

The Rajasthan Police reiterated that legitimate officers never demand personal or financial details over calls or video chats. The public is encouraged to verify the authenticity of any such communication and act responsibly to prevent falling victim to such scams.
