Police intensify action against mule accounts to combat rising cybercrime

In a renewed push to strengthen cybercrime enforcement, senior police officials have directed stricter monitoring and action against mule accounts that are frequently used to route fraudulent financial transactions. The directive came during a periodic crime review meeting led by Additional Director General of Police (crime and technical services) P Harishekaran.

During the meeting, the ADGP instructed city police units to identify individuals involved in creating and operating mule accounts and initiate strict legal action against them. Officials were also asked to provide focused training to Police Sub-Inspectors (PSIs) to improve detection and investigation capabilities related to such financial crimes. Authorities believe that targeting these accounts will help reduce cybercrime incidents significantly.

The Commissioner of Police, Seema Latkar, stated that the ADGP noted a sharp decline in overall crime figures across multiple categories over the past 2 years. Major offences such as house burglary and theft, murder, dacoity, and chain-snatching have reportedly reduced by nearly 50%. However, cyber offences continue to remain a concern. The ADGP emphasised that tracking mule accounts is essential to address the growing number of cybercrime cases.

Data shared during the review highlighted that Mysuru city recorded financial losses of around Rs 43 crore due to cyber offences in 2025. In January 2026 alone, reported losses reached Rs 5.5 crore. Officials also indicated that the ADGP directed police teams to remain alert, strengthen surveillance mechanisms, and ensure swift action against drug peddling networks.

The review meeting covered several crime categories, including conviction performance, murder and dacoity cases, offences against women and children, cases registered under the Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act, and financial fraud investigations. Senior officers, including DCP (crime and traffic) KS Sundar Raj, assistant commissioners of police, police inspectors, and sub-inspectors, were present during the session.
