Puducherry Police Boost Cyber crime Crackdown with Advanced Tech and Training

As cyber crime continues to increase, the Puducherry Police Department has implemented strategies to bolster its Cyber wing by improving technological resources, recruiting more personnel with engineering and science expertise, and providing them with adequate training.

In 2024 alone, 135 First Information Reports related to various online frauds and financial crimes were filed, resulting in the arrest of 37 individuals and the recovery of ₹13.5 crore from scammers. This year, the Cyber wing has already registered eight cases and made 10 arrests, according to police data.

To enhance their investigative capabilities, the Police Department plans to upgrade the Cyber Crime Police Station by acquiring advanced tools, such as data extraction software and forensic equipment.

Senior Superintendent of Police for Cyber Crime and Intelligence, Narra Chaitanya, informed the media that in addition to obtaining modern cyber investigation tools, the department aims to improve the skills of its officers. Personnel in the cyber wing are being trained to utilize government portals like SAHYOG, Gandiva, and Samanvay, which are designed to create a cohesive approach to tackling cybercrime.

The department has formally requested training assistance from the Indian Cyber crime Coordination Centre, part of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Additionally, they have partnered with Rashtriya Raksha University in Puducherry to develop capacity-building programs for their force.

Recently, around 25 newly recruited constables with engineering and science backgrounds joined the cyber police and received training through the iGoT Karmayogi and CyTrain platforms. The cyber police team has also been trained in cryptocurrency investigations, social media analytics, and blockchain technology.

“We are equipping our force, but people in general have to be very cautious in handling online financial matters, especially those offers with huge returns. The only way to avoid falling prey to cyber crimes is to practice ‘cyber hygiene and ‘cyber awareness.’ In this regard we are focusing on awareness in middle age group and senior citizens who have disposable income and are susceptible to become victims,” he said.

Later, the banks were informed, and the case was reported on the cyber crime branch website. “We have registered a case under section 318(4) (cheating) and 319(2) (cheating by personation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the IT Act at the cybercrime branch police station on Friday, and so far, ₹52 lakh have been seized successfully. Efforts are on to recover more money and nab the suspects,” said cybercrime branch’s station house officer Ranjeet Singh.
