The Chandigarh Police’s cybercrime unit arrested two individuals on Friday for allegedly defrauding a woman of Rs 11 lakh in an online job scam. The suspects, Sunny and Vijay Kumar, are both from Singha Devi, Naya Gaon, Mohali.
The FIR, filed on April 19, stemmed from a complaint by Snigdha Reddy, a Sector 11-B resident in Chandigarh, who claimed she was deceived while looking for part-time online work. She received a WhatsApp message offering simple online tasks, like liking videos, and was later added to a Telegram group where she was promised substantial returns for advance payments, according to the complaint.
At first, the complainant invested Rs 1,000 and received Rs 1,300 back, which led to a false sense of trust, as reported by the police. She was then gradually coerced into sending larger amounts under the guise of earning greater profits. Ultimately, she reportedly lost Rs 10,99,520 in the scheme.
During the investigation, financial and digital forensic tools were used to track the fraudulent transactions. The police discovered that Rs 50,000 was transferred to Sunny’s bank account. He admitted to opening the account for a commission, having been enticed by another suspect. Vijay Kumar, on the other hand, is said to have played a significant role in connecting Sunny to the larger network behind the scam.
During interrogation, both suspects acknowledged their participation and revealed the name of another main suspect, who is currently on the run. The police stated that efforts are being made to capture him.
The police have secured all pertinent digital and financial evidence, and additional arrests and recoveries are anticipated as the investigation continues.
