Police commissioner cautions public over rising AI deepfake scams online

VC Sajjanar, Police Commissioner, has issued an advisory warning citizens about the increasing circulation of AI-generated deepfake videos and fake images online. He urged people to stay alert and verify any suspicious content before sharing it on social media.

Speaking on Monday via X, Sajjanar highlighted that many AI-created videos and photos now appear highly realistic. This makes it difficult for users to immediately identify them as fake. However, he noted that careful observation can reveal signs such as unnatural lighting, unusual facial expressions, and awkward movements.

He also advised users to verify any doubtful content before forwarding it. In case of uncertainty, citizens should use reverse image search tools to trace the original source of images or videos.

“Forwarding unverified content based on emotions can unintentionally contribute to the spread of fake news, which may create confusion or unrest in society. In such cases, you may also become a partner in the crime of spreading fake news,” he cautioned.

The Commissioner encouraged people to follow a simple rule while using social media—think before clicking, verify the authenticity of the content, and then share it.

Amid the growing use of AI deepfake technology, Sajjanar stressed the importance of staying alert and applying critical thinking to prevent the spread of misinformation and cybercrime.
