Police arrest three in ₹58 crore cyber fraud case targeting Mumbai couple

The Maharashtra cyber police have arrested three men for allegedly providing their bank accounts to cyber fraudsters who cheated a 72-year-old Mumbai-based stock market investor and his wife of Rs 58 crore. The couple were tricked into believing they were under a ‘digital arrest’ by law enforcement officials.

According to Police, the incident began on August 19 when the complainant received a call from individuals posing as officers from the Enforcement Directorate and the Central Bureau of Investigation. The fraudsters claimed that illegal money had been detected in his bank account and that he and his wife were being placed under a ‘digital arrest’.

The accused sent forged documents to convince the victims that they were genuine officers. They then asked the couple to transfer money to their accounts for verification, assuring that the funds would be returned after the process.

Between August 19 and October 8, the victims transferred Rs 58.13 crore through RTGS to several bank accounts provided by the fraudsters. During the investigation, police discovered that the money had been routed through 18 different bank accounts across Maharashtra and other states.

After tracing the flow of funds, the cyber police identified and arrested three men who had provided their bank accounts for the transactions. They were identified as Abdul Khulli, 47, from Malad; Arjun Kadwasara, 55, from Chira Bazaar; and his brother Jetharam, 35, from Mumbai Central.

The cyber police are now questioning the arrested individuals to uncover details about the main accused behind the large-scale fraud. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to identify the masterminds and recover the defrauded amount.
