Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Imphal on Saturday for his first visit to Manipur since the ethnic violence in May 2023. He was welcomed at Imphal airport by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel.
During the visit, PM Modi will inaugurate and lay foundation stones for development projects worth over ₹8,500 crore, including infrastructure, governance, and technology initiatives aimed at the holistic growth of the state.
Security has been significantly tightened in Imphal and Churachandpur districts. Both state and central forces were deployed in large numbers at key venues, including the nearly 237-acre Kangla Fort in Imphal and the Peace Ground in Churachandpur, where the PM’s rallies are scheduled.
In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said, “In line with his commitment to inclusive, sustainable and holistic development of Manipur, the PM will lay the foundation stone for multiple development projects worth over Rs 7,300 crore at Churachandpur.” From Imphal, he will inaugurate projects valued at over Rs 1,200 crore.
Key projects include the new Manipur Police headquarters built at a cost of Rs 101 crore and the civil secretariat constructed at Rs 538 crore, both located in Mantripukhri, Imphal. From Churachandpur, Modi will lay the foundation stone for the drainage and asset management improvement project worth Rs 3,647 crore and the Manipur Infotech Development (MIND) project at Rs 550 crore.
The PM’s visit comes amid criticism from opposition parties for not visiting Manipur sooner after the ethnic clashes between Kuki and Meitei communities, which left over 260 people dead and thousands homeless since May 2023.
