PM Modi Meets Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi Ahead Of SCO Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, 19 August, met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in New Delhi, emphasising that relations between India and China have made “steady progress” since his meeting with President Xi Jinping in Kazan last year.

“Glad to meet Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Since my meeting with President Xi in Kazan last year, India-China relations have made steady progress guided by respect for each other’s interests and sensitivities,” the Prime Minister shared in a post on X.

PM Modi underlined that “stable, predictable, constructive ties between India and China will contribute significantly to regional as well as global peace and prosperity.” He also expressed that he looked forward to meeting President Xi again in Tianjin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.

During the meeting, Wang Yi formally handed over President Xi’s invitation to attend the SCO Summit, which will take place in Tianjin from 31 August to 1 September. PM Modi thanked the Chinese President for the invitation and confirmed his participation. He is also scheduled to hold discussions with President Xi during the summit.

Wang Yi conveyed his positive assessment of bilateral engagements, including his meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and the 24th Meeting of the Special Representatives, which he co-chaired with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister Modi’s Office, PM Modi stressed the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity along the border and reiterated India’s commitment to a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable solution to the boundary question.

Following his discussions with NSA Ajit Doval, the Chinese Foreign Minister highlighted that improved ties between India and China carry great significance ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit to China for the SCO Summit. “The Chinese side attaches great importance to the Prime Minister’s visit to China to attend the SCO summit at our invitation. We believe that the Indian side will also make your contribution to a successful summit in Tianjin,” Wang Yi said.

He also noted that the understanding reached between PM Modi and President Xi in Kazan had “pointed the direction for the development of our bilateral relations and provided impetus for the proper settlement of the boundary question.”
