PM Modi Launches Maruti Suzuki’s First Global EV And Lithium Ion Battery Plant In Gujarat

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated two milestone projects at Suzuki Motor’s Hansalpur EV plant in Ahmedabad, giving a major boost to India’s green mobility ambitions. He flagged off Maruti Suzuki’s first global electric vehicle, the e Vitara, and inaugurated a lithium ion battery manufacturing facility that will supply batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles.

The event was attended by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Japan’s Ambassador to India Keiichi Ono, highlighting the strength of Indo-Japanese collaboration in advancing clean energy and next generation mobility technologies.

The e Vitara is Suzuki’s first global strategic Battery Electric Vehicle, built in India for global markets. The made in India EVs will be exported to more than 100 countries, including advanced markets such as Europe and Japan, with the first shipment headed to the United Kingdom. This development cements India’s position as Suzuki’s global manufacturing hub for electric vehicles.

Alongside the EV rollout, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated a lithium ion battery facility under TDS Lithium Ion Battery Gujarat (TDSG), a joint venture between Toshiba, Denso and Suzuki. The plant will produce hybrid battery electrodes locally, with more than 80 per cent of the battery value chain now manufactured in India. This move is expected to strengthen India’s clean energy ecosystem and reduce dependence on imports.

Sharing his thoughts on X.com, Prime Minister Modi called it a “special day in India’s quest for self reliance and green mobility.” He noted that both the electric vehicle and the battery plant will accelerate India’s emergence as a hub for advanced mobility solutions under Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat. Following the ceremony, the Prime Minister also toured Suzuki’s EV manufacturing facility at Hansalpur.

The e Vitara was first introduced in Europe in 2024 and later showcased in India at the Bharat Mobility Show 2025. Built on the dedicated 40PL EV platform co developed with Toyota, the SUV will also have a Toyota version called the Urban Cruiser EV. The e Vitara will be offered with two battery options, 49 kWh and 61 kWh, with the larger pack featuring a dual motor all wheel drive variant called AllGrip e. The expected starting price in India is around ₹20 lakh ex-showroom, putting it in competition with the Mahindra BE6, Hyundai Creta Electric and MG ZS EV.
