PM Modi Marks 10 Years of Digital India, Calls It a “People’s Movement”

PM Narendra Modi has marked the 10-year milestone of the Digital India initiative, describing it as a powerful movement that has empowered 140 crore citizens and established India as a global leader in digital innovation.

In a LinkedIn post, the Prime Minister reflected on the journey since Digital India was launched in 2015 with the aim of making technology accessible to all. “While decades were spent doubting the ability of Indians to use technology, we changed this approach and trusted the ability of Indians to use technology,” he wrote.

Highlighting its wide impact, PM Modi noted, “From how we govern, to how we learn, transact, and build, Digital India is everywhere.” Internet connections in India have grown from 25 crore in 2014 to over 97 crore now. More than 42 lakh kilometres of Optical Fibre Cable, equivalent to 11 times the Earth-Moon distance, has been laid, reaching even the farthest villages. He also pointed out that India’s 5G rollout is among the fastest in the world, covering areas like Galwan and Siachen.

Under BharatNet, nearly 6.92 lakh km of optical fibre has connected over 2.18 lakh Gram Panchayats. Over the past decade, internet users in India have increased by 285 per cent, while data prices have dropped to under ₹10 per GB.

The PM Modi also highlighted key platforms such as UPI, which now processes over 100 billion transactions each year, and Direct Benefit Transfers worth ₹44 lakh crore, which have saved the government over ₹3.48 lakh crore by removing fake beneficiaries.

He praised schemes like SVAMITVA, which has issued more than 2.4 crore property cards and mapped 6.47 lakh villages. Platforms like ONDC and GeM have boosted MSMEs and women-led businesses. “ONDC recently crossed 200 million transactions… GeM has crossed ₹1 lakh crore GMV in just 50 days,” he noted.

PM Modi mentioned the success of platforms like CoWIN, DigiLocker, and FASTag in building India’s Digital Public Infrastructure. During India’s G20 Presidency, a global DPI repository and a $25 million fund were launched to support other countries in adopting inclusive technology.

PM Modi said India’s digital economy contributed 11.74 per cent to GDP in 2022-23 and is projected to reach nearly 20 per cent by 2030. India is now one of the top three startup ecosystems, backed by initiatives like the $1.2 billion IndiaAI Mission and over 34,000 GPUs as of May 2025.

“Digital India has not remained a mere government programme; it has become a people’s movement,” PM Modi wrote. “Let us build what empowers. Let us lead with technology that unites, includes, and uplifts.”
