The Indian startup community was urged by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday, April 3, 2025, to concentrate on high-tech industries like semiconductors, machine learning, robotics, and artificial intelligence rather than ice cream production and grocery delivery.
Additionally, he stated that the startup environment needs more Indian investors.
“Are we going to be happy being delivery boys and girls… Is that the destiny of India… this is not startup, this is entrepreneurship… What other side is doing — robotics, machine learning, 3D manufacturing and next generation factories factories,” Goyal said here at the Startup Mahakumbh, comparing the nature of Indian startups with that of Chinese.
According to the Minister, the new businesses should concentrate on getting the country ready for the future.
“Do we have to make ice cream or chips?” he asked.
Additionally, he emphasized the growing contribution of startups to India’s technical and economic development.
He gave the assurance that people who encounter difficulties in their beginning path would receive assistance and support from the government, which will motivate them to keep trying.
The minister emphasized the need of boosting domestic capital investments, saying that a solid base of domestic investment is essential to lowering reliance on foreign funding and guaranteeing long-term economic stability.
Mr. Goyal emphasized that in order to fortify India’s capital foundation and guarantee self-reliance, more local investors must be drawn in.
