PhonePe partners with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT features for users in India

PhonePe and OpenAI have announced a strategic collaboration to bring ChatGPT deeper into PhonePe’s consumer and merchant platforms. The partnership marks the most extensive integration of OpenAI’s technology in India to date.

ChatGPT will be made accessible across the main PhonePe app, the PhonePe for Business app, and the company’s Android marketplace, Indus Appstore. The collaboration aims to help millions of users access AI-driven support for payments, shopping, and daily planning without leaving their familiar app experiences.

Both companies described the integration as a long-term initiative rather than a standalone chatbot launch. Instead of introducing ChatGPT as a separate feature, PhonePe will embed contextual AI prompts throughout its ecosystem. These will provide users with travel planning suggestions during ticket bookings and natural language assistance for those who prefer typing or speaking over navigating menus.

According to company officials, the focus is on helping users find information quickly and easily, not on replacing human judgement. Customers exploring shopping deals could see AI-generated product comparisons, while users researching financial products might receive concise summaries with links to full disclosures.

For merchants, the PhonePe for Business app will eventually include AI tools that assist in creating catalogue descriptions, offers, and automated responses.

The partnership aligns with OpenAI’s broader expansion in India, including the launch of ChatGPT Go, a local subscription plan priced at around Rs 399 per month. Meanwhile, India’s digital payments landscape is emerging as a major testing ground for AI-assisted commerce. NPCI, Razorpay, and OpenAI are already piloting AI-enabled UPI payments through ChatGPT, as UPI processes more than 20 billion transactions every month.

PhonePe, one of India’s most popular UPI apps, has also expanded into cross-border UPI payments and launched its own app marketplace. The integration of generative AI into user journeys is seen as a natural step in this growth. However, both companies emphasised that all AI use in payment flows will strictly comply with India’s regulatory and safety standards.

If implemented effectively, this partnership could make digital experiences more seamless for millions of users. For example, someone new to mutual funds could get a simple explanation, while a group planning a holiday might use a single chat interface to coordinate budgets, itineraries, and checklists.
