Perplexity has officially released its Comet browser for Android users. The artificial intelligence enabled browser was first listed on the Play Store in September, but users could only pre register at that time. With the formal launch now complete, those who registered earlier will see the app automatically installed on their devices. Others can search for it on the Play Store and download it manually. The Android version brings most of the desktop features, along with the built in AI assistant.
The San Francisco based AI company confirmed the launch in a post on X. The app is free to download and most features are accessible to everyone. However, users on the free plan will have a limited rate of access to the AI assistant and agentic tools. Pro and Max subscribers will have higher usage limits.
Users who tested the app observed some layout changes. The AI assistant, URL bar and toolbar are all placed at the bottom of the screen. Tapping the assistant opens a full page pop up window. Unlike the desktop version where the webpage remains visible, the mobile view hides the page while the assistant is open. The assistant gives suggestions based on the page the user is browsing. Swiping down closes the window, and reopening it keeps the session history intact. It also supports voice chats.
The AI assistant can answer simple questions related to webpages. It can also trigger AI agents to handle more complex tasks such as “find the website where I can get the Samsung Galaxy S25 for the cheapest.” When the assistant browses for the user, it shows screenshots of every new page it opens. Users must grant permission before enabling this feature.
With this release, Perplexity has become the first complete AI browser available on Android. Other AI browsers such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT Atlas and The Browser Company’s Dia are not yet available for smartphones.
