Artificial intelligence tools designed to automate digital tasks are evolving rapidly and Perplexity AI has introduced a new solution aimed at expanding how AI assistants interact with personal devices. The company announced “Personal Computer” on Wednesday as an extension of its recently launched Perplexity Computer platform. Despite its name, the offering is not a hardware device but a dedicated tool built specifically for the Apple Mac Mini, enabling the system to connect with local applications and files.
The new platform functions as an agentic AI system that can operate continuously through a dedicated Mac Mini while also linking to Perplexity’s servers. In a blog post, the company explained, “Personal Computer is a digital proxy for you, working constantly on your behalf and allowing you to orchestrate all of your tools, tasks and files from any device, anywhere.” By connecting local apps and stored data with the cloud-based Perplexity Computer system, the platform can complete a wider range of complex tasks automatically.
According to the company, the system runs through secure servers with built-in safeguards. The AI must request approval before carrying out sensitive actions and provides a full audit trail for each session. Users will also have access to a kill switch that allows them to immediately take control of the system. At present, the tool is available only to a limited group of users, while interested individuals can join a waitlist for early access.
Perplexity Computer, launched last month, was designed as a cloud-based agentic AI platform that enables users to delegate web tasks through asynchronous sub-agents. With the addition of Personal Computer, those workflows can now interact directly with device-level apps and files. The company also introduced several related updates, including Computer for Enterprise, Comet Enterprise and 4 new APIs—Search, Agent, Embeddings, and Sandbox. Additional improvements include an upgraded Perplexity Finance and the integration of premium data sources such as Statista, CB Insights and PitchBook.
