After nearly 2 months of silence, Perplexity AI has returned with a major announcement. The AI startup led by Aravind Srinivas has unveiled Perplexity Computer, calling it the company’s next big leap in artificial intelligence. The new flagship product aims to redefine what AI-powered assistants can do.
Perplexity AI originally started as an AI-driven answer engine, similar to Google, summarising information into clear paragraphs with source citations. It already supports research, summarisation and content generation. With Perplexity Computer, the company is moving far beyond search. After the rollout, Srinivas took to his X profile to explain what the team had been building. “What has Perplexity been up to last two months? We’ve silently been working on the next big thing: Perplexity Computer. Computer unifies every current capability of AI into a single system. Files, tools, memory and models, orchestrated together, working for you,” he wrote.
In simple terms, Perplexity Computer is designed as a general-purpose digital worker. It does not just answer questions or generate small bits of code. Instead, it can autonomously handle tasks such as research, coding, drafting, deploying and workflow management with minimal human supervision. When given a task, it breaks it into subtasks, assigns them to specialised AI models and combines the outputs into a final result. Research, data extraction, design, coding and deployment are managed through its internal system logic. The platform is built to remember context, allowing it to continue tasks that users previously started.
The company says Perplexity Computer orchestrates 19 different AI models, selecting specialised systems depending on the task. For example, research queries and large-scale code generation are handled by different models. The product is currently available to Perplexity Max subscribers, the company’s higher pricing tier, and is expected to roll out to Pro users later. This launch signals a shift from search and assistance to execution. Instead of just browsing answers, users can now delegate complex work and receive finished outputs. In short, Perplexity Computer represents the company’s vision of a personal AI coworker capable of delivering results with as little oversight as possible.
