Perplexity Launches ‘Comet’: An AI-Powered Web Browser with Agentic Search

Perplexity, the AI startup backed by Nvidia and Jeff Bezos, has officially launched its highly anticipated AI-powered web browser, Comet. Built on the Chromium platform, Comet aims to fundamentally transform the way users interact with the internet, moving beyond traditional search and Browse to offer an advanced, intuitive, and “agentic” experience.

Comet integrates Perplexity’s own AI search engine as its default, promising a unified interface where users can ask questions, conduct research, and perform multi-step tasks directly within the browser. The browser’s core innovation lies in its “agentic capabilities,” meaning it’s designed not just to answer queries but to execute complex tasks on behalf of the user, effectively acting as a personal digital assistant.

Currently, Comet is exclusively available to Perplexity Max subscribers, who pay a premium of $200 (around ₹17,200) per month. Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas has indicated that wider access will gradually roll out via invitation to users on a waitlist throughout the summer. The browser is initially available for Mac and Windows platforms, with plans for more platforms, potentially including mobile versions, in the coming months.

Perplexity’s entry marks a significant challenge to traditional browser giants like Google Chrome (which holds a dominant market share) and Microsoft Edge. However, Comet is not alone in the emerging AI browser landscape. OpenAI is reportedly also preparing to launch its own AI-powered web browser in the coming weeks, expected to integrate ChatGPT directly into the Browse experience, offering a more conversational, chat-based interface. Google has also been injecting AI features into Chrome, such as AI-powered writing help and “AI Overview” in Search.

Perplexity aims for Comet to be more than just a search engine; it aspires to become the primary tool users employ to navigate the digital world, simplifying complex tasks and making the internet an extension of the user’s mind. This new wave of AI-powered browsers signifies a major shift in how web Browse works, moving from simple tools to interactive, intelligent assistants.
