Perplexity begins rolling out early invites for Comet AI browser on Android

Perplexity’s popular agentic AI browser, Comet, is now preparing to make its way to Android devices. The AI search engine start-up has reportedly started sending early invites to select users, allowing them to test the Android version of the browser before its wider release.

Comet was initially launched for Windows and Mac users on an invite-only basis. Later, the company expanded access to a larger group of users following strong interest and positive feedback. Now, Android users can also sign up for early access through the Google Play Store or the official Comet browser website. However, according to reports, Perplexity’s paid subscribers and frequent users of its AI-powered search engine are more likely to receive early invites.

“Comet Android early invites are going out. If you want to maximize your chances for early access and shaping how the future of mobile browsing looks like—it all comes down to your Perplexity Android usage and Pro/Max user status! More invites will go out soon,” Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas shared in a post on X.

Unlike traditional browsers such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox that use tab-based navigation, Comet introduces a unique generative AI experience. Users can ask questions directly about the web pages they are viewing and perform various interactive tasks using built-in AI tools.

Recently, Perplexity revealed that it has “completely reimagined” its Comet Assistant. The updated AI browser agent now offers several new features, including cross-tab functionality and support for practical tasks like job searching, travel planning, and deal finding. The company added that “our internal tests show it performs 23% better than its predecessor,” highlighting improved performance in handling multi-step tasks.

Since its launch earlier this year, Comet has quickly positioned itself as a strong challenger to Google Chrome, which still dominates the browser market with over 60 per cent share, according to SimilarWeb.

The competition in the AI browser segment is heating up, especially after OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Atlas last month. Similar to Comet, Atlas integrates ChatGPT directly into the browsing experience, allowing users to ask questions about web content and use a built-in AI agent for tasks like event planning or appointment scheduling.
