Paytm and Google Pay Introduce Personalised UPI IDs for Safer Payments

Paytm and Google Pay are rolling out a new feature that allows users to personalise their UPI IDs, making them look more like email addresses. This update comes as a step toward enhancing security and privacy for millions of digital payment users in India.

UPI payments continue to grow rapidly, with billions of transactions processed every month. However, the popularity of UPI has also made users a target for scammers, who exploit mobile-linked UPI IDs to steal money. By allowing customised UPI IDs with alphabets and numbers, apps like Paytm and Google Pay aim to protect personal information while keeping transactions seamless.

How it Works

Creating a personalised UPI ID on Paytm is simple:

  • Open the Paytm app on your phone.
  • Tap the Profile icon on the top-left corner.
  • Scroll to UPI & Payment settings.
  • View your current linked UPI accounts and IDs.
  • Create a new UPI ID using a mix of letters and numbers.
  • Optionally, set up backup UPI IDs to prevent transaction failures.
  • This Paytm update masks users’ mobile numbers, making payments more secure and reducing the risk of fraud.
  • More Changes Coming to UPI

The move coincides with regulatory instructions for apps to strengthen controls on payment requests, with stricter rules taking effect from October 2. With personalised UPI IDs and improved safety measures, digital payments in India are set to become not only faster but also more secure for users.

This small but important change is expected to boost user confidence and encourage safer adoption of digital payments across the country.
