Panchkula Police Bust Major Cyber Fraud, 85 Detained from Fake Call Centres

In a major cyber fraud crackdown, Panchkula police have detained 85 individuals from three fake call centres accused of cheating foreigners, including U.S. citizens, for nearly a year. The centres were being operated out of two buildings in IT Park, Sector 22.

Those detained include owners, employees, and several women from north-eastern states. According to officials, about 10 individuals have been identified as the main accused.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Manpreet Singh Sudan told the media that the employees targeted victims by offering fake services for streaming platforms such as Dish Network and fraudulent schemes like the “Obama Welfare Initiative”. Victims were informed that their services had expired or were about to expire and were persuaded to share personal and banking details for renewal. These details were later sold to organised criminal groups.

In some cases, victims were forced to purchase online coupons, which were then converted into Bitcoin and routed through the hawala network.

During the raids, the police seized 85 laptops, 62 mobile phones, and ₹8.4 lakh in cash from Certys IT Services. From iSpace Technologies Pvt. Ltd., officials recovered 62 laptops, 60 mobile phones, and ₹73,176 in cash. The third call centre, whose name has not yet been revealed by police, yielded 18 mobile phones, 21 CPUs, one laptop, and ₹3.2 lakh in cash.

In total, three FIRs have been registered — one at Chandimandir police station and two at the cyber crime police station.

Meanwhile, employees of other companies in the same buildings alleged harassment during the operation. They claimed that police forced them to remain inside their offices throughout the raid and only allowed them to leave on Thursday morning, despite having no link to the fraudulent call centres.

Responding to these allegations, DCP Sudan denied any misconduct. He clarified that employees of unrelated companies who were present outside the raided offices were only stopped for about an hour for verification purposes.

The bust marks one of the largest cyber fraud crackdowns in the region, highlighting the growing threat of organised scams targeting international victims.
