Chennai-based OrbitAID Aerospace has inaugurated a 6,500 square feet research and development facility in Bengaluru to advance India’s space capabilities in on-orbit refuelling and satellite servicing. The launch event was attended by ISRO chairman V Narayanan, who described the achievement as “a monumental milestone in our mission to revolutionise on-orbit refuelling and satellite servicing”.
The facility has been designed to extend satellite life, reduce space debris and enable sustainable space operations. It is equipped with a Rendezvous Proximity Operations and Docking testbed, an advanced fuel transfer laboratory and a cleanroom for satellite assembly. With these resources, OrbitAID aims to accelerate its mission timelines and contribute to India’s shift towards a circular space economy.
CEO SAKTHIKUMAR R called the opening a major step in developing essential technologies such as docking, refuelling and space robotics. The event also brought together senior officials and international delegates. Lt Gen AK Bhatt from the Indian Space Association underlined the importance of public private partnerships and stressed that indigenous technologies are vital to achieving self reliance.
Congratulating OrbitAID, representatives of the Indian Space Association noted that the facility marks a significant advancement in sustainable space operations. Former ISRO director Sudheer Kumar N added that such technologies will play a crucial role in future missions with a focus on sustainability, the Bharatiya Antariksh Station and debris removal.
By establishing this centre, OrbitAID Aerospace has reinforced its commitment to building solutions that will shape the future of space technology while supporting India’s long-term goals in safe and sustainable space exploration.
